First Evidence of H5N1 Bird Flu Infecting a Marine Mammal on Australia’s Mainland Coastline

    August 24, 2026

BEACHPORT, AUSTRALIA / RankWire.AI / – Australia has identified H5N1 bird flu in a long-nosed fur seal found deceased in Beachport, South Australia. This marks the initial confirmed case of mammal infection associated with the ongoing outbreak on the mainland of Australia. The public reported the animal on August 19 after discovering it without visible injuries. Authorities then collected samples for laboratory testing, which confirmed the presence of the virus. This discovery broadens the known range of affected species during the mainland outbreak.

H5N1 bird flu reaches mammal in mainland Australia
South Australia records H5N1 in a fur seal as authorities track infections in wild species.

Initial testing by the state resulted in inconclusive results, prompting further analysis. CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness subsequently verified H5 bird flu in the seal. Officials clarified that they had not identified any cluster of sick or dead marine mammals in the vicinity of Beachport. The town is located on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, where wildlife surveillance efforts have been heightened amid the outbreak. Additionally, authorities have documented infections among various seabird species along the coast and elsewhere in affected regions.

By August 23, South Australia had recorded 194 confirmed H5 events, including 11 new cases announced that day. Recent detections involved greater crested terns, a gannet, a little penguin, a silver gull, and a black-faced cormorant. The authorities now classify outbreaks as events that can involve one or multiple animals at a specific location. Across Australia, reports indicated 298 confirmed H5 cases by Sunday, with South Australia accounting for the largest share of these detections.

H5N1 outbreak spreads to mainland mammals for the first time

The outbreak on the mainland commenced in June 2026 after authorities detected H5N1 in migratory seabirds. Subsequent testing revealed the virus in native seabirds that do not migrate, such as greater crested terns. During August, South Australia reported over 1,000 dead greater crested terns. The circulating strain in Australia belongs to H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b. This same clade has previously infected wild birds, poultry, and mammals in various regions outside Australia during recent outbreaks.

There have been no reports of H5 bird flu infections in Australian poultry or other livestock related to this outbreak. The Australian Centre for Disease Control maintains that the risk to the general public remains low. Australia has not recorded any locally acquired human cases connected to the strain circulating in wildlife. Health officials advise avoiding direct contact with sick or dead animals. They also encourage reporting unusual wildlife deaths so authorities can conduct testing and ongoing monitoring.

Previous mammal infections reported on Heard Island

Australia earlier confirmed H5N1 in southern elephant seals on Heard Island, an Australian external territory in the Southern Ocean. These laboratory findings were announced in November 2025, several months before the virus was detected on the mainland. Later testing identified H5 bird flu in additional wildlife on the island, including Antarctic fur seals and gentoo penguins. The Beachport fur seal thus represents the first confirmed mammal infection linked to Australia’s current mainland H5N1 outbreak, and it marks the first such case in a native mainland mammal.

Authorities continue to monitor coastal wildlife as H5N1 spreads among seabirds across parts of Australia. The public is urged to maintain distance from sick or dead birds and marine mammals. Officials also recommend recording locations and reporting unusual wildlife deaths to animal health authorities. These reports assist in testing efforts and help track the distribution of confirmed cases. The case in Beachport adds a mammal to the expanding list of wildlife species affected during Australia’s ongoing mainland H5N1 bird flu outbreak.
